Xabi Alonso admits that the situation this season is quite different from the same time last year. While he received multiple offers from various clubs around this time last season, he claims there are none this year. Despite growing speculation that he could become Real Madrid’s next coach, the Bayer Leverkusen manager remains tight-lipped on the matter.

During last year’s March international break, Alonso had to seriously consider his future. Bayern Munich wanted him as their coach, while Liverpool, also in search of a new manager, knocked on his door. Rumors of Real Madrid’s interest were also swirling. Thanks to Leverkusen’s impressive performance under his guidance, Alonso was the talk of European football.

After taking charge of Leverkusen in 2022, Alonso rescued the team from the relegation zone. The following season, his team stunned European football with outstanding performances. In a historic Bundesliga campaign, they won the title, losing only one match — the Europa League final against Atalanta — which ended their remarkable 51-match unbeaten run.

Despite interest from several top clubs, Alonso chose to stay at Leverkusen, where his contract runs until 2026. However, this season hasn’t matched the highs of the last one. Leverkusen currently sit second in the Bundesliga, six points behind Bayern Munich.

Speaking during this year’s March international break, Alonso revealed that he hasn’t had to think about his future this time around.

“The situation is different now. Last season, I had things to consider. This time, there’s nothing like that. That’s a big difference.”

Despite Leverkusen’s dip in form, Alonso’s reputation remains intact. In fact, rumors about him replacing Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid next season are gaining momentum. However, Alonso remains firm in his stance, refusing to entertain such speculations.

“My thoughts remain the same as before. I want to focus on this season. Right now, that’s the most important thing.”

“We are at a crucial stage of the season, and I don’t want any distractions. I’m only thinking about football, nothing else.”

For now, Alonso is focused solely on guiding Leverkusen through the remainder of the season, while the football world continues to wonder whether the Santiago Bernabéu could be his next destination.
