However, the CEO of Bayer Leverkusen believes the decision must be made within the next three to four weeks.
Xabi Alonso has been the subject of intense speculation regarding a potential move to become the head coach of Real Madrid next season. Fernando Carro, the CEO of his current club, Bayer Leverkusen, stated that they would be “prepared” to let Alonso go if any of the clubs he played for during his playing career — including Real Madrid — came calling for him.
Rumors about Real Madrid’s interest in Alonso surfaced last season. Bayern Munich and Liverpool also expressed interest in him. Under his management, Leverkusen achieved their first-ever Bundesliga title and made history by going unbeaten. They also won the German Cup last season.
At the end of the season, Alonso stayed at Leverkusen, with his contract running until 2026.
This season, however, Leverkusen has struggled to replicate last year’s performance, and their hopes of retaining the Bundesliga title have all but faded. Despite this, the club still has full confidence in Alonso.
The rumors of Alonso replacing Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid next season continue to grow stronger.
Real Madrid, the current La Liga and Champions League winners, have had a difficult season, which has led to increasing uncertainty about Ancelotti’s future. As a result, the speculation surrounding Alonso as his potential successor at the Santiago Bernabéu is intensifying.
Currently in Madrid for the Laureus World Sports Awards, Carro spoke to the media on Monday and confirmed that they would be open to discussions if any of Alonso’s former clubs came forward with an offer.
“We have a respectful agreement with him. If any of the clubs he has played for (Real Sociedad, Liverpool, Real Madrid, or Bayern Munich) approaches us, we’ll sit down and talk, and we won’t stand in their way,” Carro said.
“We are a very professional club, and we need to be prepared for anything. If another club shows interest and he’s interested in joining, we’ll need to have a conversation. We don’t want that, but we need to be clear with him about our stance on the matter.”
Carro also stated that no discussions have yet taken place with Alonso regarding his future, and the club is planning for next season with him in mind. However, he emphasized that a decision will need to be made within the next three to four weeks.
“The coach’s position is very important for any club. It’s true that we are preparing for next season with him in mind. We’re working with him every day, and he is fully involved in that preparation.”
“As for whether he wants to move to another club, the decision will have to be made within the next three or four weeks. There’s not much time to waste. Right now, nothing has changed, but in the next three or four weeks, we’ll know if any changes are coming to the club.”
