Cristian Romero hints at La Liga dream amid Spurs exit rumors
Cristian Romero could be on the move this summer, with reports suggesting a potential switch from Tottenham Hotspur to Spanish giants Real Madrid or Atlético Madrid.
The Argentine defender, who has played in Argentina, Italy, and now England, has his sights set on experiencing Spanish football next. The World Cup winner has openly shared his dream of playing in La Liga someday.
Currently under contract with Tottenham until June 2027, Romero’s future in North London remains uncertain. Despite having two years left on his deal, speculation continues to grow over a potential summer departure.
Amid these swirling rumors, the 26-year-old opened up to Argentine outlet TyC Sports about his desire to play in Spain.
“La Liga is the only league I haven’t played in. Honestly, I’d be happy to play there. I want to play there because I miss this league,” Romero said.
Romero began his professional career at Atlético Belgrano in Argentina before moving on loan to Italian clubs Genoa and Atalanta. He joined Tottenham in 2021 on loan and was signed permanently the following year. This is his fourth season in a Spurs shirt.
Injuries have limited his appearances this season—he has featured in just 23 matches across all competitions.
Romero was in the starting lineup for Spurs in their 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest on Monday. However, he was subbed off at halftime, continuing his struggle to stay fully fit this season.
Despite the transfer buzz, Romero remains non-committal about a move and emphasized that he’s keeping all options open.
“The truth is I haven’t spoken to my representative yet. But I’m open to anything. I always think about improving, and that could mean moving somewhere new. But I don’t want to talk about it now because there are still a few months left in the season,” he said.
“Above all, I try to stay focused on the present. There are almost two months left in the league, and my mindset is always about competing at the highest level and finishing as strong as possible.”
Tottenham have struggled this season, winning just 11 of their 33 league matches and currently sitting 16th in the Premier League standings. Their next match is a tough one—against league leaders Liverpool on Sunday.
