Bayern Munich 3 – 0 Mainz
Even after beating Mainz, Bayern Munich’s hopes still hinged on Bayer Leverkusen’s result — and the German giants didn’t get the outcome they were hoping for.
Bayern did their part by securing a win, but they also needed Leverkusen to either lose or draw against Augsburg. Instead, Leverkusen grabbed a home victory as well, meaning Bayern’s wait to lift the Bundesliga trophy continues.
At the Allianz Arena on Saturday, Bayern eased to a 3-0 win over Mainz. At the same time, Leverkusen defeated Augsburg 2-0.
Leroy Sané, Michael Olise, and Eric Dier scored for Bayern, while Patrik Schick and Emiliano Buendía were on target for Leverkusen.
After 31 rounds, the gap between the two sides remains at 8 points. Bayern sit at the top with 75 points from 23 wins and 6 draws. Defending champions Leverkusen are second with 67 points, earned through 19 wins and 10 draws.
Had Leverkusen failed to win, Bayern could have clinched a record 34th Bundesliga title just by winning their match — and Harry Kane’s long wait for silverware would have finally ended.
The English star striker is now in his 15th year as a professional. Despite being the all-time leading scorer for both the England national team and Tottenham Hotspur, Kane has never lifted a trophy.
He captained England during their heartbreaking losses in two European Championship finals and lost three finals with Tottenham. The club also finished second in the Premier League in the 2016-17 season.
Chasing that elusive first trophy, Kane joined Bayern last season and immediately started scoring freely. However, the German giants endured their first trophyless season in over a decade, extending Kane’s wait for glory.
Leverkusen had famously ended Bayern’s 11-year reign by winning the Bundesliga unbeaten last season. But just one year later, Bayern now stand at the doorstep of reclaiming their crown.
