Liverpool 5 – 1 Tottenham Hotspur
Liverpool have matched the record of Manchester United for the most titles in English top-flight football.
Even before kickoff, thousands of Liverpool fans gathered outside Anfield, their faces lit up with excitement at the prospect of a title celebration. Although Tottenham briefly silenced the crowd early on, this Liverpool team, built differently, quickly took control. Dominating the game with authority, Liverpool sealed their title triumph in style.
Needing just one point to officially reclaim the crown with four matches remaining, Liverpool left no room for doubt, thrashing Tottenham 5-1 in Sunday’s Premier League clash.
After falling behind to a Dominic Solanke goal, Liverpool roared back with a flurry of strikes. Luis Díaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo, and Mohamed Salah all found the net to cap off a dominant display.
While Liverpool had long been a force in English football, their Premier League title drought began when the league was rebranded. It took them 30 years to lift the trophy again, finally doing so in the 2019-20 season.
In the seasons that followed, Manchester City dominated, winning four consecutive titles—a historic first. But this time, under Arne Slot, Liverpool brought City’s reign to an end. With their 20th English league title, Liverpool have now equaled Manchester United’s record.
With four games still to play, Liverpool sit atop the table with 82 points from 25 wins and 7 draws. Arsenal, in second, have 67 points from 34 matches.
Liverpool came out firing at home, launching several early attacks but failing to hit the target with their first four shots. Then, in the 12th minute, Tottenham stunned Anfield when Solanke headed home from a corner.
Liverpool didn’t take long to respond. Dominik Szoboszlai’s pass found Díaz in front of goal, and the Colombian forward tapped it in. The assistant initially raised his flag for offside, but VAR overturned the decision, reigniting the Anfield crowd.
Just two minutes later, Gakpo found the net but was clearly offside after a pass from Salah.
Liverpool finally took the lead in the 24th minute. After Tottenham lost possession deep in their own half, Mac Allister unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box to put Liverpool ahead.
By the 34th minute, Liverpool extended their lead further. After a chaotic sequence following a corner, Gakpo slotted the ball into the net through a crowd of defenders.
The second half continued in the same fashion, with Liverpool piling on the pressure. In the 63rd minute, Salah made it 4-1, converting a low shot at the near post after a quick counterattack led by Szoboszlai.
Salah’s goal was his 28th of the season, keeping him ahead of Alexander Isak by five goals in the Golden Boot race.
Tottenham’s misery deepened in the 69th minute when defender Destiny Udogie inadvertently scored an own goal while trying to clear the ball.
From there, it was just a matter of waiting for the final whistle. Once it blew, Anfield erupted. Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Mac Allister, and others celebrated in jerseys reading “Champions 2024-25.”
Taking over last June, Arne Slot, the Dutchman who succeeded Jürgen Klopp, delivered the Premier League title in his very first season. His celebration with the players was a sight to behold.
