Real Madrid defender likely out for the season amid potential suspension

Already facing the threat of a lengthy suspension, Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger is now confirmed to be sidelined for an extended period.

The German centre-back was already unlikely to feature again this season due to his unsportsmanlike conduct during the Copa del Rey final, which left him staring down the possibility of a serious ban. That concern has now been sealed with news that Rüdiger has undergone surgery to fix a longstanding knee issue.

In an official statement released Tuesday, Real Madrid confirmed: “Rüdiger has undergone surgery on his left leg. His recovery process will begin shortly.”

Rüdiger had been struggling with discomfort in his left knee throughout the season. Back on January 25, a heavy bandage was visible on his leg during a match against Valladolid. Just a week later, he had to leave the pitch against Espanyol due to a muscle injury. Most recently, during Saturday’s intense Copa del Rey final—where Real lost 3–2 to Barcelona in extra time—he picked up another knock.

That match spiraled into controversy when referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea called a foul against Kylian Mbappé, sparking anger on the Madrid bench. Rüdiger, visibly furious, stormed in from the sidelines and threw an object—reported by Spanish media to be an ice cube—at the referee.

For that act, the German was shown a red card. Even after the sending-off, Rüdiger remained visibly furious. Although he later apologized, it may not be enough to avoid a heavy sanction.

According to the Spanish Football Federation’s (RFEF) code of conduct, if charged under Article 101, which covers “minor violence toward officials,” Rüdiger could face a suspension ranging from four to twelve matches. The consequences could be more severe if he’s punished under Article 104, which covers “physical aggression toward a referee,” and carries a potential ban of three to six months.

With Real Madrid eliminated from all other competitions, their only remaining title hope lies in La Liga. Even there, the odds aren’t in their favor—Carlo Ancelotti’s team trails Barcelona by five points after 33 rounds.
