Argentina’s 1978 World Cup winning defender Luis Galván Dies at 77

“He played in every match on Argentina’s path to World Cup glory, forming a solid defensive partnership with captain Daniel Passarella.”

Former Argentine defender Luis Galván, a key figure in Argentina’s 1978 World Cup triumph, has passed away at the age of 77.

According to reports from several Argentine news outlets, Galván had been hospitalized for several weeks in the city of Córdoba with pneumonia. Unfortunately, he never recovered.

Galván enjoyed a 17-year professional football career that began in 1970, most of which he spent at various clubs across Argentina. Toward the end of his playing days, he also had a brief stint in Bolivia.

He made his debut for the Argentina national team in 1975 and was part of the squad for the Pan American Games that year. In the 1978 FIFA World Cup, he played every match and formed a formidable central defensive partnership with captain Daniel Passarella.

He was also included in the squad for the 1982 World Cup, although Argentina couldn’t replicate their earlier success that time. Galván retired from international football in 1983 and hung up his boots from the professional game in 1987.
