Hamza Choudhury’s Sheffield United are now just one win away from securing a return to the English Premier League.
Having taken a commanding lead in the first leg, Sheffield finished the job in style in the second. After demolishing Bristol City 3-0 away, they repeated the same scoreline at home on Monday night — sealing a dominant 6-0 aggregate win and marching into the Championship playoff final.
One more victory, and Premier League football awaits them next season.
Sheffield United have drawn extra attention from Bangladeshi fans this season, thanks to the presence of Hamza Dewan Choudhury. The 27-year-old, who has already represented Bangladesh in international football, delivered strong performances as a right-back in both legs of the semi-final.
After the first-leg win, Hamza posted on social media: “Half the job done, see you all Monday.”
Once the second-leg was wrapped up, his reaction was: “Alhamdulillah, what a night! One more big push… see you at Wembley.”
The playoff final is set to be held on May 24 at the iconic Wembley Stadium in London.
Each season, three teams are promoted to the Premier League from the Championship. The top two teams qualify directly, while teams placed third to sixth fight it out in the playoffs for the final spot. This season, Leeds United and Burnley have already secured automatic promotion, while Sheffield United finished third.
In the final, Sheffield will face either Sunderland or Coventry City. Sunderland currently hold the edge, having won the first leg 2-1 away at Coventry. The return leg is scheduled for Tuesday.
Sheffield were relegated from the Premier League last season after managing just three wins in 38 matches. Now, just a year later, they are on the verge of making a return.
However, it remains unclear whether Hamza will continue at Sheffield if they secure promotion. He originally joined the club on loan from Leicester City in January. With Leicester now relegated from the Premier League, Sheffield may look to retain Hamza — especially given his consistent performances and growing popularity among fans.
Hamza made his international debut for Bangladesh on March 25 in a match against India.
