The English club has yet to officially comment on the physical condition of Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi following his surgery.
Awoniyi, who sustained a serious abdominal injury during a match, underwent surgery but was later reported to have fallen into a coma, according to British media.
The incident occurred during last Sunday’s Premier League match, a 2-2 draw against Leicester City. In the 88th minute, while attempting to connect with a cross from teammate Elanga, Awoniyi collided with the goalpost.
Awoniyi, who joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in 2022, was not in the starting lineup for the match. He suffered the severe injury just five minutes after replacing Ibrahim.
After receiving initial treatment on the field, the 27-year-old forward resumed playing, but was seen limping in the last 10 minutes of the match.
Realizing the severity of the injury, he was taken to the hospital, and according to BBC reports, surgery was performed on him on Monday night. The next day, Nottingham Forest announced that Awoniyi was “recovering well.”
However, later reports from BBC and other British media outlets on Tuesday revealed that following the first phase of surgery, Awoniyi had slipped into a coma.
Reuters has reached out to Nottingham Forest for comments regarding the updated situation.
