Mainz 2, Leverkusen 2. Although no one won in yesterday’s Bundesliga match at the MEWA Arena, Leverkusen left the field with smiles. No, the team didn’t win the title with this 2-2 draw. In fact, the club that won the Bundesliga last year lost the crown this season to Bayern Munich.
However, by drawing on the final day of the 2024-25 Bundesliga season, Leverkusen achieved a unique feat. The team remained unbeaten in away matches for two consecutive seasons — a record unmatched in German football. On the same day, Xabi Alonso finished his tenure as Leverkusen’s head coach. The 43-year-old Spaniard is strongly rumored to be headed to coach Real Madrid.
During the 2023-24 season, Leverkusen didn’t lose a single one of their 34 Bundesliga matches. Alonso’s team earned at least one point in every game, both home and away. Along with the league title, they also lifted the German Cup. This season, however, they failed to win either trophy and even lost some league matches. Still, their unbeaten streak on the road remained intact.
Just like last season, Leverkusen played 17 home and 17 away matches this time as well. They lost three matches — all at home. They remained unbeaten in all 17 away games. By drawing with Mainz, Leverkusen extended their unbeaten away streak to two full seasons, breaking Bayern’s previous record. Bayern had gone unbeaten in 33 consecutive away matches from the 32nd match of the 2011-12 season to the 27th match of the 2013-14 season.
Bayern’s record had been achieved under two coaches — Jupp Heynckes and Pep Guardiola. At Leverkusen, this feat was accomplished solely under Alonso’s leadership. The record for the most consecutive unbeaten away matches by a single coach in Bundesliga history was previously held by Udo Lattek, who was Bayern’s coach during 1983-87 with 27 matches. Alonso surpassed him back in February this year.
Out of the 34 consecutive unbeaten away matches, Leverkusen won 23 and drew 11. On August 22, 2025, Leverkusen will have the chance to extend this record further in the opening match of the 2025-26 season. However, Alonso will no longer be on the sidelines by then.
Though Alonso still has one year left on his contract, he has already announced his departure from the club. Meanwhile, Carlo Ancelotti is reportedly heading to Brazil, increasing Alonso’s chances of becoming Real Madrid’s next coach. But before leaving Germany, Alonso gifted Leverkusen with an unprecedented record.
