Last year, Spain and Argentina won the Euro and Copa America titles respectively. Since both teams secured their trophies, all eyes have been on the Finalissima. This match features the champions of Europe and South America facing off against each other.
After a long break, the Finalissima returned in 2022. That year, Copa America winner Argentina defeated Euro champions Italy to claim the title.
In 2024, Argentina qualified again for the Finalissima by winning Copa America back-to-back. Meanwhile, Spain earned their spot by reclaiming the Euro crown, setting up a clash between these two giants. However, uncertainty arose about when the match would actually take place. At that time, Argentine journalist Gaston Edul expressed his doubts about the game being played.
Gaston Edul explained that no decision had been made on the Finalissima’s schedule because a suitable date had yet to be found. The crowded football calendar, with World Cup qualifiers and the UEFA Nations League, cast doubt over the event’s organization.
The good news is that the uncertainty seems to be clearing, and the match between these continental champions is set to happen. UEFA recently confirmed in a statement that a meeting was held about the game during the 75th FIFA Congress in Paraguay. While they confirmed plans to organize the match, no official date has yet been announced.
Though UEFA has not revealed details, several European media outlets have reported on possible dates. The Spanish outlet Marca said the match is likely to be held during the international break from March 23 to 31, 2026, in Mexico City. Taking place nearly three months before the World Cup, this Lionel Messi-led clash promises to generate a lot of excitement.
