Pedro Gonçalves has returned to the Portugal squad for the UEFA Nations League finals.
Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez has named a strong 27-man squad for the final four of the Nations League, keeping faith in most of his regulars. Despite speculation surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s fitness, the all-time leading scorer in international football is included in the team.
Portugal will take on Germany in the semi-final at Munich’s Allianz Arena on June 4. The final will also be held at the same venue on June 8.
Among the notable call-ups is young winger Rodrigo Mora, who has earned his first senior team selection after impressing for Portugal’s youth teams and FC Porto. Mora, who turned 18 earlier this month, joined Porto’s academy at the age of nine. This season, he broke into the club’s senior side from the B team and went on to score 10 goals and provide 4 assists in 23 league appearances.
Mora also finished as the top scorer in last year’s UEFA U-17 European Championship with five goals, although Portugal lost the final to Italy.
Coach Martínez is thrilled to have the promising youngster in his squad.
“Just saying Rodrigo Mora’s name brings a smile to my face. I believe he will usher in a new era for Portuguese football,” said the Spanish coach.
The attacking lineup for Portugal now includes 40-year-old Ronaldo, along with Gonçalo Ramos, Diogo Jota, Pedro Neto, and newcomer Mora.
Ronaldo missed Al-Nassr’s last three matches, which sparked rumors about his fitness. However, Martínez dismissed the concerns, assuring fans that the captain is ready to face Germany.
“Cristiano is fit and available to play. No problems at all. I’m very happy with the quality in our squad. We have plenty of options. We even have four players competing in the Champions League final — that’s fantastic,” said Martínez.
Attacking midfielder Pedro Gonçalves from Sporting Lisbon also makes a return to the squad. The 26-year-old missed much of the 2024–25 season due to injury, but finished strong, scoring the opening goal in a 2-0 win over Vitória on the final day of the league. That victory helped Sporting clinch the league title, finishing two points ahead of Benfica.
Since his debut in 2021, Gonçalves has made only three appearances for the national team.
Portugal, winners of the inaugural Nations League, lost 1–0 to Denmark in the first leg of the quarter-finals, but bounced back with a dominant 5–2 victory in the return leg to secure their place in the semis.
The day after the Portugal–Germany clash, Spain and France will face off in the second semi-final in Stuttgart.
