Missing out on the Champions League means Manchester United will lose out on potential revenue of around $110 to $135 million. But despite the setback, head coach Ruben Amorim has made it clear—he will not resign.

The last glimmer of hope is gone. After a nightmare season in the Premier League, Manchester United also failed to win the Europa League final. That loss not only denied them a trophy but also a backdoor entry into next season’s Champions League. Amorim is ready to accept the consequences. If the club no longer wants him, he says he’ll walk away without complaint—but he won’t step down on his own.

United are having one of the worst seasons in their Premier League history. Amorim’s team has managed to win only 10 of their 37 league matches, losing 18, and currently sits in 16th place. In contrast, their Europa League campaign was much stronger—they remained unbeaten all the way to the final and had a real shot at glory and Champions League qualification.

But it all fell apart in the final. On Wednesday, they lost 1-0 to another struggling Premier League side—Tottenham Hotspur.

Now, as the dreadful season nears its end, Amorim is feeling the pressure. With two years still remaining on his contract, he’s entitled to compensation if sacked. But the Portuguese coach made it clear:

“Right now, I’m not going to try and save myself. That’s not who I am. I can’t do that—it’s hard for me. So, I have nothing to show the fans and I’m not going to say, ‘We’ll improve here, there are too many problems over there.’ I just can’t do that, and I won’t.”

He added:

“The belief right now is minimal. Let’s see… I’ve always been open. If the board or the fans think I’m not the right person for this club, I’ll leave the next day—without any discussion about compensation.”

Even though his team lost, Amorim believes United outplayed Spurs on the pitch:

“I’ve always been honest with you. Of course, we didn’t play a perfect game today, but it was clear we were the better side. Especially in the second half—we did everything but score. I think today just wasn’t our day.”

“The boys gave everything to win. Maybe we’ll reflect on this more in the future. But right now, I don’t want to talk about what’s next. We just have to deal with the pain of losing this match.”

For a club like Manchester United—hugely popular in England and around the world—missing out on European competition is a major blow, not just emotionally but financially. Without Champions League participation, the club stands to lose between $110 million and $135 million in revenue that would’ve come from broadcasting rights, commercial deals, and matchday income.

Still, Amorim is trying to see the bright side of the situation:

“For a club like ours, not being in the Champions League is disappointing. We’ll need to approach things differently now, even in the transfer market. But it also means we’ll have more time—more time to think, to work midweek, and to improve in the Premier League. That’s where we’ll focus now.”

The big question remains: will Amorim still be in the dugout next season?

He’s already answered that:

“I know this is a very difficult situation. We lost to another English side, and I understand the fans’ frustration. But I can assure you, I’m not going to step down. I’m not walking away, because I haven’t lost confidence.”

“I strongly believe in my work. You’ll see—nothing will change in the way I do my job.”
