Although the decision is not in his hands, said Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano.
On the field, things haven’t been going well for Inter Miami lately. Off the field, many associated with the club are feeling anxious. Will Lionel Messi stay? The star player’s contract renewal is still uncertain. Coach Mascherano’s hope is that the club quickly finalizes talks with Messi to bring stability back.
Generally, Major League Soccer doesn’t attract much global football attention. Inter Miami’s profile was mainly boosted by having a big name like David Beckham as an owner. But since Messi joined, the club instantly gained worldwide recognition and curiosity has surged to new heights.
Thanks to Messi, Inter Miami tasted significant success by winning the Supporters’ Shield last season. But this season marks the end of Messi’s current contract.
No clear news has come yet on the new deal. About a week ago, Mascherano said he hoped for good news soon about Messi’s future.
That same message came from the Inter Miami coach during Friday’s press conference.
“As a coach, of course I want him to sign the new contract as soon as possible and for us to know the news quickly. Above all, for the peace of mind of the fans, the club, and everyone involved,” Mascherano said.
“But it’s not my responsibility to make that happen or comment on it. I’m not part of the negotiations between the two parties.”
Inter Miami will face Philadelphia early Sunday morning in MLS. Over the last seven matches across all competitions, Messi and Mascherano’s team has managed only one win and suffered five losses.
The coach believes the team’s confidence is taking a hit, which is affecting performance.
“We’ve taken advantage of a long week to have more intense and longer training sessions. What we need to focus on is rebuilding our confidence. The team has lost some belief in itself.”
“Psychology is a very important aspect of football. Anyone can train hard, but the real test is how a player performs in a match situation. We’re talking to the players. It’s up to us to overcome this tough period, improve, and take control of this situation.”
