After the final match of the season, Ruben Amorim wants to speak from the heart in front of Manchester United’s home crowd.
United are standing at the bitter end of a nightmare season—one that’s been nothing short of disastrous. Facing the fans after such a painful campaign isn’t easy, but head coach Ruben Amorim is ready for that challenge. He says he will stand on the pitch and “apologize to everyone.”
United will play their final Premier League match on Sunday, hosting Aston Villa at Old Trafford. Regardless of the result, Amorim wants to share his feelings with the home supporters after the game.
This has been Manchester United’s worst-ever season in Premier League history. They’re sitting 16th in the table, with only 10 wins and 18 losses from 37 games.
Yet, despite their Premier League struggles, United showed a completely different side in the Europa League, where they went unbeaten all the way to the final. There was even hope of securing a Champions League spot with a Europa League title.
But that final glimmer of hope was shattered last Wednesday when they lost 1–0 to fellow strugglers Tottenham Hotspur. That result confirmed United won’t play in any European competition next season—only the second time that’s happened since 1990.
With the season now all but over, the 40-year-old Amorim has decided to ask fans for forgiveness.
“I will apologize, I think that’s clear. There’s no time to explain. I will be honest with the fans and say what’s on my mind—especially what’s in my heart.”
After the match against Aston Villa, United’s players and coaching staff will walk around the pitch at Old Trafford to acknowledge the fans. No matter how disappointing the season has been, Amorim believes skipping this tradition isn’t an option.
“It’s tradition, and we have to face it. If we don’t do it, it would be the biggest mistake. I know the coach has to speak in front of everyone, and I will do it. At the very least, that’s something I can do. I have an idea of what I want to say, but I’ll decide tomorrow. If there’s ever been a season where we needed to do this, I think it’s this one.”
