After more than a year away from the dugout, the experienced coach returns to familiar territory with a fresh challenge ahead.
Just 24 hours after parting ways with Sérgio Conceição, AC Milan have appointed a new head coach—Massimiliano Allegri, returning for a second stint with the Italian giants.
Rumors of Allegri’s return had been circulating ever since Milan’s contract with Conceição neared its end. On Friday, the club officially confirmed the news through a statement on their website.
Conceição took charge of Milan late last year and made an immediate impact. Within a week of his appointment, he led the team to victory in the Italian Super Cup. In a thrilling final, Milan came from two goals down to beat city rivals Inter Milan 3-2.
However, the early success didn’t last. Milan were eliminated from the Champions League play-offs, and their final hope—the Coppa Italia—ended in heartbreak with a loss to Bologna in the final. In Serie A, the once-dominant 19-time league champions stumbled to an eighth-place finish.
Given such underwhelming results, Conceição’s departure seemed inevitable.
Now, Allegri faces the task of getting the team back on track. He’s no stranger to Milan, having previously managed the club from 2010 to 2014. During that time, he led them to the Serie A title in the 2010–11 season and also secured the Italian Super Cup.
The 57-year-old coach enjoyed his most successful spell at Juventus. From 2014 to 2019, he guided the Turin club to five consecutive Serie A titles, four straight Coppa Italia triumphs, two Italian Super Cups, and reached the Champions League final twice. He returned for a second stint at Juventus from 2021 to 2024, though it didn’t bring the same level of success.
Now, after a break of just over a year, Allegri is set to return to coaching—back where he once tasted glory.
