Just three days after being thrashed by PSG on Europe’s biggest stage, Italian coach Simone Inzaghi has stepped down as Inter Milan’s manager.

Inter will now have to find a new head coach ahead of the upcoming Club World Cup, following Inzaghi’s resignation in the aftermath of their 5-0 defeat to PSG in the Champions League final last Saturday in Munich. The Serie A club officially confirmed the 49-year-old’s departure on Tuesday.

The 2024–25 season has been a disappointing one for Inter. After winning Serie A last season, they finished second this time—just one point behind champions Napoli. In the Coppa Italia, their campaign ended with a crushing 4-1 aggregate loss to city rivals AC Milan in the semi-finals.

In a separate statement, Inzaghi announced that it was time for him to move on.

“After four years, it’s time to say goodbye to this club where I’ve given everything. I want to dedicate one final word to the millions of Inter fans who encouraged me, cried and suffered with me during tough times, and smiled and celebrated our six achievements together. I will never forget you.”

During his time at Inter, Inzaghi won one Serie A title, two Coppa Italia trophies, and three Italian Super Cups. However, he also lost two Champions League finals within three seasons.

According to reports from Italian media, Inzaghi is set to take over at Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal and could be leading them in the upcoming Club World Cup.

The new-format Club World Cup will kick off in the United States on June 14.
