Paris Saint-Germain’s captain admits that celebrating their Champions League victory was emotionally challenging for him.

It’s understandable to have mixed feelings when you beat a club from your own country, especially when many of the opponents are your national teammates. That’s exactly how Gianluigi Donnarumma felt. The PSG captain revealed that after defeating Inter Milan to win the Champions League, celebrating the victory was tough for him.

Last Saturday, at Munich’s Allianz Arena, PSG crushed Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final, claiming the prestigious European title for the first time in the club’s history.

During the match, Donnarumma was more of a spectator than a tested goalkeeper, as Inter’s attack rarely threatened him.

Looking ahead, Donnarumma will soon be teammates again with some of those Inter players in the Italian national team. He has already joined the national camp for World Cup qualifiers, where players like Alessandro Bastoni, Federico Dimarco, Nicolò Barella, and Davide Frattesi from Inter are present.

When asked if he spoke to his national teammates about the Champions League final, Donnarumma said they don’t discuss the match at all.

“I didn’t say anything. After the match, I shared heartfelt hugs with my teammates, and that made me happy. I struggled to fully enjoy the Champions League victory because on the opposing team were my brothers, with whom I’ve spent a lot of time,” he explained.

“We don’t talk about that game here, not even joke about it. We only focus on the upcoming two matches and think about giving everything together.”

Donnarumma still has one year left on his PSG contract, though rumors link him with a move to Inter Milan. His agent was reportedly seen at Inter’s headquarters. When asked about these speculations, the 26-year-old goalkeeper said he is happy at PSG.

“I didn’t know he was at Inter,” Donnarumma said. “I’m good in Paris, and whether the contract gets renewed or not is up to the club.”

“I’m open to anything, but right now my first choice is PSG because I’m happy here, the fans love me, and the team loves me. I hope to stay here for many more years.”

Italy missed out on the last two World Cups due to failing to qualify. Their campaign for the 2026 World Cup begins this Friday against Norway, followed by a match against Moldova on Monday.
