The Premier League champions have reached an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen to sign the German attacking midfielder.
Liverpool are set to bring Florian Wirtz to Anfield for a hefty fee. According to BBC reports, the English champions have struck a deal with Wirtz’s current club, Bayer Leverkusen, to secure the German attacking midfielder’s transfer.
The British media outlet reported on Friday that Liverpool’s initial outlay will be around £106 million. Including various bonuses, the total could rise to £116 million.
Liverpool will only pay these bonuses if they achieve certain levels of success. If that happens, this could set a new British transfer record.
Currently, the British transfer record belongs to Chelsea, who paid £107 million in January 2023 to sign Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández from Benfica.
In August of the same year, Chelsea also spent an initial £100 million on Ecuadorian midfielder Moisés Caicedo from Brighton, with bonuses potentially raising that figure to £115 million.
The fee Liverpool will pay for Wirtz will become their club record transfer.
Previously, Liverpool’s highest spend was the £64 million initially paid to Benfica for Uruguayan striker Darwin Núñez in 2022, with bonuses potentially pushing that to £85 million. Back in 2018, they paid £75 million to Southampton for Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk.
Manchester City and Bayern Munich were also interested in Wirtz, but it is believed the player’s preference was to join Liverpool.
Wirtz has spent his entire professional career at Leverkusen so far. He debuted for the senior team at 17 and has scored 57 goals in 197 appearances for the German side.
He played a major role in Leverkusen’s first Bundesliga title in the 2023-24 season and was named the league’s best player that year.
Wirtz made his debut for Germany in 2021 and has scored 7 goals in 31 international matches.
He will become Liverpool’s second signing from Leverkusen this summer, following Dutch defender Jurriën Timber.
After winning the Premier League in his first season under coach Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool are strengthening their squad for the challenges ahead.
