The Argentine former midfielder is returning to the very club he once played for—this time in a new role.
After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, Sevilla are aiming for a fresh start in the upcoming campaign. Their hope lies in Matías Almeyda. The former Argentine international, who once wore the Sevilla jersey as a player, is now coming back as the head coach.
Almeyda has signed a three-year deal with the Spanish club. The 51-year-old was most recently in charge of AEK Athens.
It was with Sevilla that Almeyda first stepped into European football. After spending five years at River Plate in his homeland, he joined Sevilla in 1996. His career then took him to Lazio, Parma, Inter Milan, Brescia, and a few other clubs before he returned to River Plate, where he hung up his boots in 2011 after a 20-year playing career.
This defensive midfielder represented Argentina in 40 international matches, including appearances at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups.
Soon after retiring as a player, he began his coaching journey at River Plate. After managing several clubs, Almeyda got his first European coaching opportunity in 2022 with AEK Athens. In his debut season, he guided the team to a domestic double. Before the following season even began, his contract was extended until 2028. However, after a disappointing campaign this year, he parted ways with the club last month.
It didn’t take him long to find his next destination.
