Following a frustrating season and a much-needed break, Phil Foden says he’s rediscovered his hunger and is determined to “prove people wrong.”
The Manchester City star, who had seemingly forgotten the taste of scoring, found the net early in his return. Just two minutes into City’s opening match of the Club World Cup, Foden scored—his first goal since January and his first in 20 matches for club and country. He didn’t stop there, showcasing flashes of his trademark brilliance throughout the game.
Jeremy Doku added another in the first half as City defeated Moroccan side Wydad AC 2-0 in Philadelphia on Wednesday. But it was Foden’s performance that brought the biggest relief for City fans.
The 2023–24 season had been a forgettable one for Foden, despite having enjoyed a stellar campaign the year before—where he was even named Premier League Player of the Season. An ankle injury sidelined him for an extended period, and when he did play, he often looked drained and off-form.
Last month, Foden admitted he’d lost himself both on and off the pitch. He even pulled out of the England squad earlier this month, citing physical and mental fatigue.
The break, however, seems to have worked wonders. His return to form was evident on the field—and echoed in his post-match reflections.
“My hunger is back, and I want to prove people wrong,” he said. “Of course, I’m buzzing to get on the scoresheet and create chances again.”
“I won’t lie, it’s been a really tough season. Not my best. But I had a bit of a break, got some rest, and now I’m looking forward to the new season,” he added.
Foden, 25, also expressed gratitude for being released from England’s matches against Andorra and Senegal.
“These days, footballers rarely get a break like that. It was important for me. I just rested, spent time with family, and worked on myself. It was vital for me to feel fresh again.”
City will face UAE club Al Ain in their next match on Monday at 7:00 a.m. Bangladesh time.
