Concerns over his job at the club had been looming for quite some time.
Ever since Leicester City’s disastrous season, those fears grew stronger. And now, it has come true. Leicester City have parted ways with coach Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The English club announced on Friday that, by “mutual consent,” they have ended their contract with Van Nistelrooy. After the team’s dismal performance in the 2024-25 season, which saw them relegated to the second tier, this outcome seemed inevitable.
Leicester City had been on the back foot since the season began. Due to poor results, Steve Cooper lost his job, and Van Nistelrooy took over as head coach last November when the club was 16th in the league table.
However, the team’s form didn’t improve—in fact, it worsened. From 18th place, Leicester City were relegated to the Championship, ending the Premier League era of the club that had famously won the league in the 2014-15 season.
Under Van Nistelrooy’s guidance, Leicester City suffered 19 defeats in 27 matches, winning only five.
With five rounds still left in the league, the club’s relegation was confirmed. Despite that, Van Nistelrooy stayed on to see out the season. After nearly a month more in charge, he has now been shown the door. In his farewell message, the former star striker wished the club all the best for the future.
