Usually, footballers are full of smiles on the day they sign a contract. When family or loved ones are present, the joy only grows. But Paul Pogba’s contract signing created a very different, emotional scene.
Last night, Ligue 1 club AS Monaco shared a video on social media showing Pogba signing his contract. The background music was a mournful tune — because Pogba was openly crying as he signed.
The French World Cup-winning midfielder’s tears fell onto the table. At one point, he covered his face with his hands. Two people nearby tried to comfort him, patting his back. Likely, one was a close friend or family member, and the other a senior Monaco official.
In the video caption, AS Monaco wrote, “This is an emotional moment for Paul Pogba.”
Many can understand why Pogba broke down like this. Who would have thought the 32-year-old midfielder would return to professional football after everything he has faced?
In September 2023, Pogba was temporarily banned from all football after testing positive for a banned substance while playing for Italian club Juventus. Following an investigation confirming the violation, he was given a four-year ban in February 2024.
However, after an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Pogba’s ban was reduced from four years to 18 months. This gave him hope to dream of a football comeback. But last November, Juventus and Pogba mutually terminated his contract, casting doubt over his professional future once again.
Finally, AS Monaco offered Pogba a fresh start with a two-year contract. This is why the former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder could not hold back his tears during the signing.
A few days ago, in an interview with a French TV channel, Pogba said, “I’m determined to return to the field. I’m mentally and physically ready. It’s just a matter of time.” Now, that wish has come true.
After officially signing with AS Monaco, Pogba immediately joined training. The club finished last season third in Ligue 1, meaning Pogba will also play in the UEFA Champions League next season.
