The Portuguese coach’s stint at Botafogo has come to an end after just four months.
Henrique Paiva has been sacked as Botafogo’s head coach following the club’s exit from the FIFA Club World Cup Round of 16. The Portuguese manager’s time in charge of the Brazilian side has now officially ended after a short-lived four-month spell.
Botafogo had made a promising start to the newly expanded 32-team Club World Cup, currently being held in the United States. They opened their campaign with a 2-1 win over Seattle Sounders, then stunned European champions PSG with a 1-0 victory. Although they lost 1-0 to Atlético Madrid, the team still advanced to the knockout stage as Group B runners-up.
However, their journey ended last Saturday after a hard-fought battle against fellow Brazilian side Palmeiras, where they lost 1-0 in extra time.
The club announced Paiva’s dismissal in an official statement on Monday. The 55-year-old coach had taken charge of the team back in February.
