In a thrilling, action-packed match, Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal stunned Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to reach the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup.
The decisive moment came when Yassine Bounou made a crucial save to deny Manchester City in their final attack. The referee blew the final whistle immediately after, sparking wild celebrations among Bounou and his teammates. The excitement even spilled over to the dugout, where coach Simone Inzaghi showed clear satisfaction. The commentator captured the moment perfectly, saying, “That seals the deal… a fantastic night for Al Hilal, an incredible night for Saudi Arabian football… Manchester City are out, Saudi football has arrived…”
What seemed unimaginable before the match — something beyond even the wildest expectations — unfolded on the Club World Cup stage. Al Hilal’s fairy-tale victory eliminated Manchester City and booked their place in the quarter-finals.
The match, which ended early Tuesday morning at 9:45 AM Bangladesh time, was a rollercoaster of excitement that extended into extra time. Al Hilal defeated Pep Guardiola’s side 4-3 in a breathtaking encounter.
Having just taken over before the tournament, Simone Inzaghi led Al Hilal to hold Real Madrid to a draw in their opening game. Now, in the round of 16, they have delivered an even bigger shock.
Al Hilal’s hero was Marcos Leonardo. The 22-year-old forward equalized shortly after halftime when the team was trailing 1-0 and later scored the winning goal in the 113th minute.
Another Brazilian, Malcom, also scored, while Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly contributed one of the goals for Al Hilal.
Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou stood out with incredible saves throughout the match, repeatedly keeping his team in the game.
For Manchester City, Bernardo Silva, Erling Haaland, and Phil Foden found the net.
At Orlando’s Camping World Stadium, Manchester City dominated possession and shot statistics as expected. They controlled the ball for 69% of the match, took 30 shots with 14 on target — yet only converted three goals.
Al Hilal took 17 shots, with 6 on target, scoring 4 times — proving their efficiency.
Bernardo Silva gave City the lead in the 9th minute, scoring from a scramble in the box. However, replays showed City’s Algerian defender Riyad Aït-Nouri slightly touched the ball with his wrist. Al Hilal’s players protested strongly but the referee allowed the goal.
City had another golden opportunity in the 24th minute. Haaland’s pass found Savinho inside the box, who tried to chip Bounou, but the keeper showed great composure to save.
City continued to press. Bounou kept out shots at the 30th, 38th, and 44th minutes.
The second half started differently. Within the first minute, Malcom dangerously broke into City’s box and, after a rebound off City’s keeper Ederson and a defender, Leonardo headed home to equalize.
Six minutes later, Al Hilal took the lead with a stunning counter-attack. João Cancelo played a beautiful pass from just outside their box. Malcom surged forward from midfield and finished perfectly past the keeper.
Just three minutes after that, Haaland’s header from a corner brought City level once more.
City relentlessly attacked after that, but either narrowly missed or faced the resilient Bounou. In the 85th minute, Bounou made a brilliant save; Ali Lazami cleared the rebound off the line. Shortly after, Ruben Dias’s powerful shot from outside the box was stopped by Bounou again.
In the 95th minute of extra time, Kalidou Koulibaly headed home from a Ruben Neves corner to put Al Hilal ahead.
City equalized in the 104th minute from a well-organized attack, with Foden finishing superbly off a perfect cross from Hayán Shehki.
But City’s fight ended there. In the 113th minute, Sergej Milinković-Savić’s header was saved by City’s keeper, but Leonardo, positioned nearby, controlled the ball on his chest and managed to tap it in despite falling awkwardly.
After that, City desperately pushed for a goal, but Al Hilal hit back on the break. Both teams were visibly tired by this stage, and no more goals came.
Earlier the same day, Fluminense shocked Champions League runners-up Inter Milan with a 2-0 victory, setting up a quarter-final clash with Al Hilal.
This means that the semi-final will definitely feature a club from either Brazil or Saudi Arabia.
