Portuguese footballer Jota dies in car accident at 28
Diogo Jota, the Portuguese forward for Liverpool, has died in a car accident in Spain at the age of 28.
The tragic news was reported by Spain’s state-owned television, citing local firefighters. The accident occurred in the province of Zamora, where Jota’s younger brother, André Silva, also lost his life.
Silva, 26, was a professional footballer playing for a second-tier club in Portugal.
While police have confirmed the incident to Reuters, they have not yet officially identified the victims. According to the local fire department’s website, the crash took place around midnight on Wednesday. The car caught fire, and two men—aged 28 and 26—were found dead at the scene.
Just last month, Jota married his longtime partner, Ruth. The couple has three children.
Jota played a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League campaign last season. He joined the club from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020. Over the years, he made 182 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions, scoring 65 goals.
Since making his international debut in 2019, Jota earned 49 caps for Portugal and helped the team win two UEFA Nations League titles.
