Atlético Madrid have bolstered their squad ahead of the new season by signing a Euro and Olympic-winning midfielder.
After a disappointing run that saw them crash out of the Club World Cup in the group stage, Atlético Madrid have wasted no time rebuilding. The Spanish side has landed midfielder Alejandro Baena Rodríguez — better known as Álex Baena — from Villarreal.
Baena joins Atlético on a five-year contract. According to reports from Spanish media, the deal cost the club around €50 million.
Baena, 23, has been with Villarreal since the age of 10, rising through the ranks from the C team to the first team in 2020. He spent a season on loan at Girona, playing a key role in their promotion to La Liga before returning to Villarreal, where he established himself with two standout seasons.
Though primarily a left winger, Baena is a versatile presence capable of operating across the midfield.
He has represented Spain at every youth level from U-16 to U-23 and made his senior debut in 2023, scoring in his first appearance against Cyprus.
Baena was part of Spain’s victorious Euro U-21 squad last year, making two substitute appearances in the tournament. He was also a key member of the team that won gold at the Paris Olympics, scoring in the final against France.
After a stellar campaign with Villarreal that earned him a place in the La Liga Team of the Season, Baena is now ready for a new chapter.
“I’m very happy — this is a huge step forward in my career,” said Baena. “I’m joining one of the biggest clubs in Spain and in Europe.”
