Arsenal have reportedly spent a significant fee to secure defensive midfielder Martín Zubimendi.
After finishing as Premier League runners-up for three straight seasons, the Gunners are determined to end their title drought by strengthening their squad. In line with that goal, they’ve brought in Spanish midfielder Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.
The 26-year-old has signed a long-term contract, Arsenal confirmed on Sunday. However, the club did not disclose the exact duration of the deal or the transfer fee.
British media reports suggest that Zubimendi had a €60 million release clause in his contract with Sociedad, and Arsenal are believed to have paid the full amount.
This is Arsenal’s second signing of the current transfer window. Earlier this month, they secured Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea.
Zubimendi played 236 matches for Real Sociedad, scoring 10 goals. He was also part of Spain’s Euro 2024-winning squad. In the final against England, he came on at halftime to replace Manchester City’s Rodri and helped his team win 2-1.
With Rodri sidelined for much of the 2024–25 season due to injury, Zubimendi has stepped up to become a regular in the national team. So far, he has earned 19 caps for Spain.
