Four months ago, Real Madrid’s appeal against their players’ punishments has been rejected.
The sanctions handed to Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé, Antonio Rüdiger, and Dani Ceballos for misconduct during a Champions League match remain upheld after UEFA’s appeals panel dismissed the club’s appeal.
The incident occurred on March 12 during the Champions League round of 16 clash between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid at Wanda Metropolitano. After Real Madrid won the dramatic tie-breaker to advance to the quarter-finals, several players celebrated exuberantly in front of Atlético’s fans—a gesture deemed “offensive” under UEFA regulations.
Video footage showed some Real players dancing and making provocative gestures towards the home supporters, who responded by throwing objects from the stands.
In early April, UEFA fined Rüdiger €40,000, Mbappé €30,000, and Ceballos €20,000 for their actions. Real Madrid filed an appeal to overturn the fines, but UEFA rejected it Tuesday due to lack of sufficient grounds.
Rüdiger and Mbappé were also handed one-match suspensions, which have been suspended for one year. Should they commit a similar offense within that period, the ban will be enforced.
Now, aiming to recover from a trophyless season, Real Madrid is competing in the FIFA Club World Cup. On Wednesday, they face PSG in the battle to reach the final.
