While Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer has blamed PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma for the serious injury, Jamal Musiala himself isn’t pointing fingers. “These things happen in football,” Musiala said.
Musiala suffered a broken leg in the Club World Cup quarter-final against PSG, but the Bayern midfielder is refusing to blame anyone for the incident.
The injury occurred last Saturday during Bayern’s 2-0 loss to PSG in Atlanta. Musiala collided with Donnarumma in a nasty moment late in the first half. While challenging PSG defender Willian Pacho for the ball, Musiala was accidentally stepped on by Donnarumma. He received treatment on the field before being stretchered off.
Scans later revealed a fracture in the lower part of his leg along with an ankle dislocation. The 22-year-old underwent surgery after returning to Munich, and he’s expected to be out for several months. He’ll likely miss the start of the new season.
After the match, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany didn’t hold back his frustration, saying he had “rarely been this angry.” Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer directly blamed Donnarumma for the injury.
However, in an Instagram post on Wednesday, Musiala chose a different tone:
“The surgery went well, and my recovery is going smoothly. I just want to say that no one is to blame. In my view, things like this happen in football. I’ll now focus on rebuilding my energy and positivity for the journey ahead.”
Donnarumma, visibly shaken by the incident, was seen holding his head in disbelief after realizing the extent of Musiala’s injury. The Italian goalkeeper later shared a message on Instagram, praying for Musiala’s swift recovery.
Last season, Musiala played a key role in Bayern’s Bundesliga title win, contributing 21 goals and 8 assists across all competitions.
