Lionel Messi has become the top scorer in the league after leading Inter Miami to another victory.
The Argentine superstar is absolutely hooked on scoring goals in Major League Soccer (MLS). Once again on the field, he found the net twice, extending his record of consecutive multi-goal games.
Inter Miami defeated Nashville 2-1 at home on Saturday morning (Bangladesh time), with Messi scoring both goals for his team.
The 38-year-old World Cup winner has now scored two goals in five straight MLS matches. No other player in the league’s history has managed to score multiple goals in four consecutive games, let alone five.
Messi’s scoring streak began in May, when he scored twice in a 4-2 win over Montreal. He followed that with a brace against Columbus Crew in a 5-1 victory.
After bowing out of the FIFA Club World Cup, Messi dazzled again last Sunday with two brilliant goals in a 4-1 win over Montreal. He also scored twice against New England Revolution.
Continuing this fine form, Messi scored twice against Nashville this time. With 16 goals in 16 league matches, he is now joint top scorer alongside Nashville’s Sam Surridge. Messi has also provided 7 assists.
Inter Miami dominated the match overall, giving Nashville little chance. Miami registered nine shots, five on target, while Nashville managed eight shots with only two on goal.
In the 8th minute, Miami almost took the lead when Luis Suarez’s delicate chip from the corner of the box sailed just over the crossbar.
Then, in the 17th minute, Messi scored with a low free-kick from outside the box — marking the 69th free-kick goal of his career.
Nashville equalized early in the second half, with Harry Mukhtar’s brilliant header in the 49th minute.
But Messi quickly regained the lead for Miami, benefiting from a bit of luck. In the 62nd minute, while trying to pass to a teammate, Nashville’s goalkeeper accidentally passed the ball to Messi, who calmly slotted it home inside the box.
This defeat ended Nashville’s 15-match unbeaten run across all competitions.
With 11 wins and 5 draws in 19 matches, Miami now sits fifth in the MLS Eastern Conference with 38 points — five points behind leaders Philadelphia. However, Miami has played three fewer games due to their Club World Cup commitments.
