Spanish club Real Madrid have signed 22-year-old defender Álvaro Carreras from Benfica.
Last season, Real Madrid struggled with a series of injuries to their defenders. To strengthen that area ahead of the new campaign, the club has now added Álvaro Carreras to their squad.
The 22-year-old Spaniard has signed a six-year contract with Real Madrid, keeping him at Europe’s most successful club until June 30, 2031.
Carreras is the third defender to join Real Madrid this summer. Earlier, they signed Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool and promising Spanish defender Dean Huusen from Bournemouth.
Carreras spent three years in Real Madrid’s youth setup before moving to Manchester United in 2020, where he played for the club’s under-23 team. Although he received call-ups to the senior squad, he never made a first-team appearance.
Between 2022 and 2024, Carreras was loaned out to Preston North End and Granada. In January 2024, he moved on loan to Benfica, making his debut for the Portuguese club just a week after joining.
By the end of the season, Benfica made the transfer permanent. Carreras went on to play 68 matches across all competitions for the club, scoring 5 goals and providing 6 assists. He also featured in the recently concluded Club World Cup.
