Barcelona not only handed the iconic No. 10 jersey to the young Spanish sensation but also completed the official signing formalities with him.
It was almost certain that Lamine Yamal would inherit Barcelona’s legendary No. 10. Finally, the official announcement has arrived. Starting next season, this young Spanish star will wear the iconic No. 10 jersey for the Catalan giants.
At a special event on Wednesday, Barcelona officially presented the No. 10 shirt to Yamal. On the same day, the Spanish champions completed the remaining formalities of his contract with the 18-year-old winger.
Barcelona had already signed a deal with Yamal last month, extending his stay until 2031. However, no official photos were taken back then. Reports suggested it was because Yamal’s grandmother, a very important figure in his life, couldn’t be present at the time.
On Wednesday, Yamal celebrated his new contract with Barcelona alongside his entire family.
From 2008 until his move to PSG in 2021, Lionel Messi wore Barcelona’s No. 10 — becoming a true legend at Camp Nou. The World Cup winner played a key role in Barcelona’s 10 La Liga titles and 4 Champions League triumphs. He remains the club’s all-time top scorer.
Before Messi, legends like Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, and Romário wore the No. 10 jersey for Barcelona. After Messi’s departure, Ansu Fati took the shirt but couldn’t establish himself in the team due to recurring injuries. Last month, Fati joined Monaco on loan.
Now, the honor of wearing the iconic No. 10 belongs to Yamal — and he couldn’t be prouder.
“My childhood dream was to play for Barça, grow up at this club, and wear the No. 10 shirt. Every child born in Barcelona dreams of this. Messi left his mark in his way, and I will leave mine.”
Yamal turned 18 last Sunday. Even at this young age, he has already become a star for Barcelona, breaking records and achieving remarkable milestones.
So far, Yamal has scored 25 goals in 106 matches across all competitions for Barcelona. He has won La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup with the club — and tasted Euro success with Spain.
This will be Yamal’s fourth jersey number at Barcelona. He made his debut in the 2022–23 season wearing No. 41. The following season, he switched to No. 27, and last year he played with No. 19.
Interestingly, Messi also wore No. 19 before inheriting the iconic No. 10.
Speaking about his ambitions after receiving the No. 10, Yamal said:
“I haven’t won the Champions League or the World Cup yet. Now, my goal is to win both.”
