However, Como’s Italian coach Cesc Fàbregas doesn’t see this possibility happening anytime soon.
Fàbregas, a close friend of Lionel Messi, said that the Argentine superstar is doing very well at Inter Miami in the United States. But he doesn’t completely rule out the chance of Messi joining another club in the future. The Como coach hopes to one day have Messi play for his team.
Last week, Messi’s wife Antonela Roccuzzo and their three children were seen in the stands during Como’s pre-season match against Lille. Since then, speculation has been swirling about Messi potentially leaving Miami to join the Italian club.
On Wednesday, Como will face Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli in a friendly match. The day before, Fàbregas was asked whether the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner might play for Como someday.
His response was simple: “Never say never.”
He then clarified why Messi’s family was at the Como match.
“Antonela was staying at my house for a week’s holiday because Leo (Messi) was away playing in Cincinnati and New York during that time. They (Messi’s family) took the opportunity to travel and catch up with friends. We are very close friends, our wives are also good friends, and our children are the same age.”
“He (Messi) is very happy in America. So we stay calm about this (transfer talk).”
Messi’s contract with Miami runs until December this year. Talks are ongoing about extending the deal for the 38-year-old.
Fàbregas retired from playing in July 2023 to focus on coaching and later took charge of Como. Under his guidance, the club finished 10th last Serie A season.
The former World Cup-winning Spanish midfielder’s contract with Como runs until June 2028.
