After an incredible performance last season in the English Championship, the 6-foot-6 goalkeeper has returned to his boyhood club, Manchester City.
Photos and videos flooded Manchester City’s social media with captions like, “Where it all began…,” “A new journey starts…,” “After 10 years…,” and “He’s home again…” — reflecting the deep bond between James Trafford and the club.
Trafford, who developed himself in City’s academy and spent eight years there, has now returned to his beloved home turf. This time, he joins the first team, bringing with him big challenges and even bigger dreams. The 22-year-old goalkeeper has signed a five-year contract with Manchester City.
He will proudly wear the club’s iconic No. 1 jersey at his childhood club.
According to English media reports, City re-signed him for £27 million. Just two years ago, the club had let him go for £15 million.
Trafford joined Manchester City’s academy at age 12. Though he occasionally featured in the youth and senior squads, he never made a competitive first-team appearance. In 2021, he went on loan to Accrington Stanley in League One, followed by a loan spell at Bolton Wanderers the next year.
After those loan spells, he moved to Burnley in July 2023. His Premier League debut came ironically against Manchester City. Throughout the season, he played 28 matches for Burnley and caught attention with his performances — though Burnley eventually faced relegation.
Last season in the Championship, Trafford was phenomenal, keeping clean sheets in 29 games. In one match alone, he saved two penalties. Across 46 games that season, he conceded just 16 goals, helping Burnley earn promotion back to the Premier League.
Such stellar form brought him back into Manchester City’s radar. Newcastle United was also reportedly keen, but City’s interest made other clubs’ chances slim.
Trafford himself is thrilled to be back at City.
“Rejoining City is a very special moment for me and my family. I’ve always dreamed of returning to Manchester City. I consider this place my home. It’s truly a special club, with incredible people who make it a unique place to work and play.”
“I’m still young and hungry to learn and improve. I know that if I want to become the best goalkeeper I can be, I won’t find a better environment than Manchester City.”
Though he has yet to feature for the senior national team, Trafford has represented England at U17, U18, U19, U20, and U21 levels. At the 2023 U21 European Championship, he kept a clean sheet in all six matches — a historic feat for the tournament. In the final against Spain, he saved a crucial added-time penalty and blocked the rebound, playing a key role in England’s title win.
At City, he will compete for the goalkeeper spot alongside Ederson and Stefan Ortega. The new season kicks off for City on August 16 against Wolverhampton Wanderers, as they aim to reclaim the Premier League title.
