Although Marcus Rashford’s arrival has increased competition for places in the team, Barcelona’s Brazilian star Raphinha sees it as a positive development for the club.
After an outstanding season last year, Raphinha has become one of Barcelona’s most important players. But Rashford’s entry into the attack also sends a warning to everyone: a dip in form could cost you your spot. Still, the Barcelona star embraces this competition with optimism.
The attacking trio of Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and Lamine Yamal struck fear into opponents last season. Now Rashford has joined them. The English forward recently completed his move from Manchester United to the Catalan club.
Speaking to Diario Sport, Raphinha said that increased competition ultimately benefits the team.
“When you put on this jersey and play for this club, you have to be ready for all kinds of competition. In my opinion, the more fighting there is within the team for places, the better. Competition pushes players to improve, and if you want to win trophies, that’s the most important thing.”
Last season, Raphinha played a key role in Barcelona’s La Liga and Copa del Rey triumphs. Across all competitions, he scored 34 goals and provided 25 assists in 56 matches. Now, he is firmly in the running for the Ballon d’Or.
The 28-year-old Brazilian aims to raise his game even further in the new season.
“I always try to be at my best in training and matches. Last season, I worked hard and did better than the previous one. I will keep trying to improve again this season.”
His main goal is winning the Champions League. Barcelona has not tasted success on Europe’s biggest stage in the last decade. Though Raphinha has already won five trophies wearing the Blaugrana shirt, the Champions League remains elusive — and he is desperate to end that wait.
“A personal challenge for my career is the Champions League. It’s also the club’s goal to win a sixth title. I’ll give my all to help the club achieve it. I’m sure my teammates feel the same way.”
As a reward for his outstanding performances last season, Barcelona recently extended Raphinha’s contract until 2028. But he has no intention of stopping there — he wants to keep chasing success in this jersey.
“If the club is happy with me, I want to stay as long as possible. Of course, I know that if I don’t play well enough or contribute, it will be time to leave. But for now, I’m here and in good physical and tactical shape.”
