Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, no manager has lasted more than three years at Old Trafford.
But Rúben Amorim has set his sights high—he wants to stay with Manchester United for two decades. The Portuguese coach, who firmly believes the club will rise again to conquer England and Europe, has made it clear he’s here for the long haul.
Amorim took charge in November last year after Erik ten Hag was sacked. Despite his impressive success at Sporting Lisbon, he could only guide United to seven wins in 27 Premier League games—a disappointing return for a club of such stature. The season ended with United finishing 15th, their worst-ever result in the Premier League era.
Since Ferguson stepped down in 2013 after 26 consecutive years at the helm, United have seen a revolving door of managers, none lasting beyond three years. But Amorim, whose contract runs until 2027 with an option to extend by another year, is aiming for longevity.
“I want to stay, I want to stay for 20 years. That’s my goal and I truly believe it. Something will happen. It always does. Sometimes I’ll be lucky. I’ve been lucky many times in my managerial career, and my goal is to be here for many years. But we know results will decide that… I’m ready to start from scratch.”
United’s last Premier League title came under Ferguson in 2013. Their most recent Champions League triumph was in 2008, beating Chelsea in the final. Amorim is confident those trophies will return to Old Trafford.
“I have no doubt. Because there are things you cannot buy, and this club has them. History, fans—we have that. Then there’s money. We have money, even without the Champions League. So yes, we can do it. In the future, we’ll have even more money. We’re doing everything.”
