After an anxious wait, Inter Miami has finally delivered some reassuring news about Lionel Messi.
Following days of uncertainty, the club confirmed that the Argentine star’s muscle injury isn’t serious. However, it’s certain that he’ll have to spend some time on the sidelines. Inter Miami is still unsure about the exact timeline for their captain’s return.
Messi suffered the injury early in the Leagues Cup match against Club Necaxa on Saturday. He tried to play on for a couple more minutes but left the field in the 11th minute.
Last season, Messi missed several matches for both club and country due to multiple injuries. At 38, his body is more vulnerable, and recovery is more challenging than before—leading to concern after this latest setback.
However, Miami brought some relief in a statement on Sunday, revealing that tests did not show anything serious.
“The test results confirmed that there is a minor injury in his right leg muscle. His medical clearance will depend on how his treatment progresses and how his body responds,” the club said.
It now appears unlikely that Messi will play again in the Leagues Cup. The tournament, featuring 36 clubs from the United States and Mexico, currently sees Inter Miami in third place with five points from two matches. They earned three points with a 2–1 win in the first game and added two more by beating Necaxa in a penalty shootout.
Their next match is on Wednesday, and they will resume their regular MLS season on Sunday.
Before the injury, Messi was in top form. He is tied at the top of the MLS scoring chart with 18 goals. In the first Leagues Cup match, both of Inter Miami’s goals came from his assists.
