Manchester United defender Leny Yoro is optimistic about putting last season’s disappointment behind and getting back on track in the upcoming campaign.
Following what he called a “successful” pre-season tour of the United States, Yoro sent out a message of redemption — not aimed at any specific opponent, but rather focused on bouncing back from the team’s failures last season.
It was a miserable run for Manchester United throughout the previous campaign. A string of poor performances saw them finish 15th in the league table — their worst result in the Premier League era. They exited the League Cup in the quarter-finals and were knocked out of the FA Cup in the fifth round.
Their only relatively decent run came in the Europa League, but even that ended in disappointment, as they lost the final to Tottenham Hotspur and missed out on Champions League qualification.
Now, with the new season approaching, United have shown signs of revival during pre-season. The Old Trafford side delivered promising performances during their US tour — winning 2-1 against West Ham United and 4-1 against Bournemouth in their first two matches. In their final game, they drew 2-2 with Everton despite taking the lead twice.
The tour was a morale booster, and it’s fair to say it injected some much-needed positivity into the squad. That sense of renewed confidence was echoed by French centre-back Yoro.
“When you play for Manchester United, you have to show the mentality to give your best. In my opinion, what we did last season was a big mistake. You can’t stay at this level when you’re at Manchester United. The fans know it, everyone knows it. And I believe we understand that too.”
“This season will be different for us. It will be like payback for last season. We have to do better.”
United are set to play one more friendly at home this Saturday against Fiorentina.
After that, their Premier League journey begins on August 17 with a high-profile clash against Arsenal.
