Despite delivering outstanding performances in PSG’s treble-winning campaign last season, the Italian goalkeeper still couldn’t win over the coach’s trust.
After days of rumors and speculation, the official announcement finally came—Gianluigi Donnarumma confirmed he is leaving PSG. Following last season’s incredible form, he had no desire to leave the club so soon. But the Italian goalkeeper made it clear—he is being forced out.
For days, the media had been reporting tensions between Donnarumma and coach Luis Enrique. The speculation was confirmed when the Super Cup squad was announced. Despite being one of the best goalkeepers in the world right now and playing a vital role in PSG’s treble last season, Enrique left him out of the squad.
To add to the message, PSG also signed goalkeeper Lukáš Štetina from Lille—making their intentions toward Donnarumma even clearer.
Realizing the situation, the 26-year-old shared his thoughts on social media on Tuesday.
“Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of this team or contribute to its success. I am extremely disappointed and heartbroken.”
Donnarumma expressed his wish to play one final game at home to bid farewell to the fans. If that opportunity is denied, he has already delivered his goodbye.
“I hope to play once more at home, to look at the supporters and say goodbye. That’s how it should be. But if that’s not possible, I want the fans to know—your support and affection mean everything to me, and I will never forget it.”
“Playing for this club and living in this city has been an incredible honor. Thank you, Paris.”
Donnarumma came through AC Milan’s academy and made his professional debut for the Italian side in 2015. After six years at his boyhood club, he joined PSG in 2021. At the time, Milan’s management and supporters were deeply disappointed, but he was eager for a new challenge.
Now, with a year still left on his contract, he is being forced to leave PSG in frustration.
His next destination is still unknown, though several English Premier League clubs are reportedly showing interest.
