‘No one is prepared to see a deal like this,’ says the Spanish defender who has joined Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr.
Iñigo Martínez has explained his sudden departure from Barcelona. Catalan coach Hans-Dieter Flick was taken aback upon hearing the news. The Spanish center-back, now at Al Nassr, says the timing for this decision felt right.
Martínez joined Cristiano Ronaldo’s club last Saturday, even though he still had one year left on his Barcelona contract. His exit came as a surprise, as he was a regular starter last season. His central defensive partnership with Pau Cubars played a key role in Barcelona’s La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup victories.
In an interview with a Spanish radio station, the 34-year-old defender revealed that he informed the Barcelona coach about his decision after returning from the pre-season Asia tour.
“After coming back from the tour, I spoke with Flick… When I returned to Barcelona, I was honest with him. I knew he would fully understand, given that I had one year left on my contract and I am 34 years old.”
“It surprised him initially, but he completely understood soon after. It was a constructive conversation, and I felt very emotional. There was mutual respect and admiration. It wasn’t a heated situation—it was very heartfelt.”
Last season, Al Nassr had been eager to sign Martínez, offering an attractive deal reported by ESPN. At the time, Barcelona’s sporting director Deco convinced him to stay. This time, he answered the call from the Saudi club.
Martínez, who played 71 matches for Barcelona, believes such opportunities rarely come in a footballer’s life.
“It surprised many people. I have treated the fans well and created exciting moments. But in football, one day everything can change overnight. In terms of finances, this league is unlike any other.”
“Considering my career and what I’ve achieved, this felt like the right moment to take this step. Opportunities like this rarely come; when they do, it’s hard to say no. No one is prepared to see a deal like this; when you receive such an offer, it’s hard to even believe it.”
