Luis Enrique knows the task ahead won’t be easy, but his confidence remains intact.
After a grueling season and only a week of training, Enrique has been impressed by the progress of his PSG squad. The Spanish coach firmly believes his team has what it takes to defend their Champions League crown.
Last season, PSG won a historic treble and finished runners-up at the newly formatted Club World Cup. Just days after resuming training, they played in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday. Facing Tottenham Hotspur, PSG were trailing 2-0 until the 84th minute, but staged a stunning comeback, leveled the score, and lifted the trophy after winning on penalties. It marked their fifth trophy under Enrique this year.
On Sunday, PSG will begin their campaign for a fifth straight Ligue 1 title with an away match against Nantes. Speaking in his press conference the day before, Enrique praised his players’ resilience in the Super Cup.
“After only a few days of training, the way the team fought in the European Super Cup was very satisfying. This fighting spirit has been the DNA of this team for the past few seasons.”
Enrique has already won back-to-back Ligue 1 titles with PSG. Earlier in his career, he achieved consecutive La Liga triumphs with Barcelona, but fell short of completing a hat-trick.
The 55-year-old coach admits the league opener won’t be straightforward, but remains optimistic about their chances against Nantes, who finished 13th last season.
“After just one week, I can already see improvements. We know how tough away games can be, no matter the opponent. At Nantes’ ground, it won’t be easy—we’ll face real challenges.”
Last season, PSG demolished Inter Milan 5-0 in the final to win their first-ever Champions League trophy. Enrique has now made it clear what the team’s target is for the new campaign.
“Our aim is to keep making history, as it has been from day one. Winning the Champions League two years in a row is rare and would be very special.”
“That’s our goal. We are highly ambitious. We know how tough this challenge is, but that mentality is only natural. Everything depends on how we perform.”
