Following accusations from the team’s star striker, the Premier League club has fired back.
Alexander Isak has now leveled a “broken promise” claim against the very club whose jersey propelled him into the spotlight with dazzling performances. The Swedish forward made it clear that maintaining his relationship with Newcastle United is no longer possible.
All summer, speculation has swirled about Isak’s potential move. Media reports suggested that Liverpool made an £11 million bid to sign him, which Newcastle rejected. Nineteen days after that, Isak—who scored 23 Premier League goals last season and led Newcastle to the Champions League—dropped what many are calling a bombshell.
According to the BBC, the 27-year-old forward is determined to leave Newcastle at any cost. He believes the club will only consider letting him go if a bigger offer comes from a major club.
Isak was absent from Tuesday’s Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) awards, where he had been named in the Premier League Team of the Season. Later, he clarified his stance on Instagram amid the ongoing transfer speculation:
“I’ve stayed silent for a long time while others spoke. My silence gave them space to validate their statements. They knew that what was said behind the scenes and the agreements made were not reflected in their words (yet they continued to say them).”
“The reality is, I was promised something, and the club has known my position for a long time. The idea that this has only just come out is misleading. When a promise is broken, trust is lost, and then the relationship can no longer be maintained. For me, that is the situation now—it’s better for everyone, not just for me, to make a change.”
Isak insists he informed the club of his desire to move earlier, though Newcastle denies this. The club called the situation “disappointing” in a statement:
“Our response is clear: Alex is under contract with us, and no club official has made any promise that he can leave Newcastle United this summer. We want to keep our best players, but we also understand that players have their own wishes, and we are willing to listen to them.”
The current transfer window closes on September 1. In the remaining time, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool—or any other club—will submit a new offer for Isak. If not, his future at Newcastle will remain a major uncertainty.
Newcastle United started the new season with a goalless draw against Aston Villa. Isak was not included in the squad for that Premier League match last Saturday.
