To Real Madrid fans, he was affectionately known as “Goatquez” — the five-time Champions League winner who has now closed an 18-year chapter with Los Blancos to embrace a new journey.
Widely recognized as Lucas Vázquez of Real Madrid, the 34-year-old Spanish footballer has officially signed with Bayer Leverkusen on a two-year deal as a free agent. At his new club, he will wear the No. 21 jersey.
Except for a single loan spell at Espanyol, Vázquez’s entire professional career had been tied to Real Madrid. Over 10 seasons, he collected an incredible 23 trophies, including five Champions League titles, four La Liga titles, four UEFA Super Cups, and three FIFA Club World Cups.
Born in Curtis, Spain, Vázquez began his football journey at just nine years old in his local academy. At 16, he joined Real Madrid’s youth setup, progressing through the C and B teams before earning a loan move to Espanyol in 2014-15. By the following season, he was promoted to Madrid’s first team, where he went on to make over 400 appearances, often wearing the captain’s armband.
But Vázquez’s Real Madrid legacy isn’t defined only by numbers or trophies. Loved by teammates and adored by fans worldwide, he was known for his unwavering dedication and willingness to sacrifice for the club.
Initially starting out as a winger, he later adapted to play as a right-back to meet the team’s needs. Although the transition wasn’t always easy and at times impacted his performance, Vázquez consistently gave his best. His ability to make an impact — whether as a substitute winger or an emergency right-back — proved crucial in countless matches.
However, last season was far from his best. Realizing that his age and dip in form made it difficult to secure a spot in the star-studded squad, Vázquez decided it was time to move on. He reached the milestone of 400 appearances for Real in May, and on July 16, he officially announced his departure from the club.
Bayer Leverkusen’s managing director, Simon Rolfes, expressed excitement over the signing:
“We’ve signed an incredibly experienced player who has won everything possible with Real Madrid over the past 10 years. Lucas brings superb technical ability, tactical intelligence, and outstanding passing skills. His influence on our team will be remarkable.”
After finishing second in the Bundesliga last season, Leverkusen has started the new campaign under their new coach, Erik ten Hag, but stumbled with an opening loss. The arrival of Lucas Vázquez is expected to bolster their squad with much-needed experience, versatility, and winning mentality.
