After three matches, Manchester United finally secured their first win of the season in a dramatic encounter at Old Trafford.
Luck was on their side as they found the net in the first half. With renewed confidence, United dominated the pitch, but couldn’t score again. Burnley, however, struck back after the break. In just 11 minutes, they scored two goals from both wings, putting United at risk of another dropped point. But there was no disappointment this time. In the final moments, captain Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot, sending the “Red Devils” into celebration.
In a thrilling Premier League match at Old Trafford on Saturday, United won 3-2, claiming their first victory of the season in the third match.
United took the lead after an own goal from the opponent, but Burnley’s Lyle Foster equalized. Moments later, Bryan Mbuemo’s goal put United ahead again, only for Burnley to level it once more with Jadon Anthony’s goal. But in the dying minutes, Fernandes’ penalty secured the victory for the league’s most successful club.
After losing points in the first two league matches and being eliminated from the League Cup by lower-league Grimsby Town in a penalty shootout on Wednesday, Manchester United finally tasted victory.
With 4 points from 3 matches, they currently sit 9th in the table, while Burnley is 11th with 3 points.
In the first 30 minutes, United had five shots on goal but only managed to get two on target, none of which resulted in a goal. However, luck was on their side when they took the lead.
In the 27th minute, Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick found Casemiro in the box, whose header hit the crossbar. The ball rebounded off Burnley’s defensive midfielder Josh Cullen and into the net. Despite the goalkeeper’s desperate dive to save it, the ball had already crossed the line.
United dominated possession and created several chances in the first half, taking 14 shots. But they couldn’t extend their lead before the break, with Amad Diallo missing a clear opportunity in the 45th minute after being set up for a shot in the box.
The second half saw a shift in momentum. Burnley, who had only taken two off-target shots in the first half, equalized in the 55th minute. Lyle Foster finished a cross from the right with a powerful strike into the net.
Their celebration was short-lived. Just two minutes after conceding, United regained the lead. Diogo Dalot’s cutback found Bryan Mbuemo in space, and he calmly made it 2-1. The Cameroonian forward scored his first Premier League goal for United, having netted the team’s first goal in the League Cup against Grimsby Town last week.
United then conceded again in the 66th minute when Anthony scored for Burnley.
Despite maintaining possession for most of the match and continuing to press for a goal, United couldn’t find the back of the net. In added time, Diallo was fouled in the box, and after a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty. Fernandes stepped up and coolly converted the spot-kick, sealing the win for United.
