Liverpool 1 – 0 Arsenal
A brilliant late free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai broke the deadlock and secured victory for Liverpool.
The clash between last season’s top two sides didn’t produce many clear-cut chances. Both teams struggled to create opportunities, and it looked like the match might end goalless. However, Szoboszlai’s stunning free-kick changed everything, giving Liverpool the win and the top spot in the English Premier League.
Jurgen Klopp’s side claimed a 1-0 victory at Anfield on Sunday. Liverpool had 53% possession and managed nine shots at goal, three of them on target, while Arsenal managed just one shot on target from 11 attempts.
Arsenal suffered an early setback in the fifth minute when experienced defender William Saliba left the field with an injury.
Arsenal initially pressed Liverpool hard at Anfield. Despite decent possession, Liverpool struggled to create chances. In the 22nd minute, Arsenal had their first real opportunity. From a corner, Nuno Madueke’s shot from close range was brilliantly saved by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson with a reflex save.
Ten minutes later, Arsenal found themselves in trouble. Goalkeeper David Raya misplayed a ball to Virgil van Dijk, who had no teammate to pass to. Alexis Mac Allister’s follow-up shot was blocked by Declan Rice, preventing a scoring chance.
Liverpool continued to threaten in the second half. In the 60th minute, Hugo Ekitike found the net, but the goal was ruled out due to Cody Hakpo being offside.
The decisive moment came in the 83rd minute. Szoboszlai’s brilliant free-kick from 25 yards curled inside the post, leaving Raya helpless. Liverpool had earned the set-piece after Martin Subimendi fouled Curtis Jones.
Neither side created significant chances for the remainder of the match.
With this win, Liverpool secured their third consecutive victory in three games, reaching nine points at the top of the table. Chelsea sits second with seven points, while Arsenal, with six points, remain in third.
