Mallorca have stripped Dani Rodríguez of the captaincy and placed him on a temporary suspension following his public outburst over being benched against Real Madrid.
The Spanish midfielder expressed frustration after being left out of Mallorca’s 2-1 defeat at the Santiago Bernabéu last Saturday. His family attended the match, but Rodríguez spent the entire game on the bench — a decision by the coach that didn’t sit well with the 37-year-old.
Taking to Instagram, Rodríguez shared a photo of his family in the stands and voiced his disappointment, writing:
“An important lesson and advice: never expect anything from anyone, especially nowadays when there is little respect for process, culture, and hard work. Do not do things expecting something in return. Do it for yourself and for your own satisfaction.”
Rodríguez later echoed his frustration in an open letter published by Spanish media, further criticizing the situation.
On Thursday, Mallorca released an official statement confirming their decision:
“Rodríguez has been relieved of his duties and will not receive his salary during this period. He has also been removed from the captaincy, and this decision takes effect immediately.”
Rodríguez joined Mallorca in 2018 and has been one of the club’s most experienced players, making 282 appearances and scoring 32 goals to date.
