Whether Lionel Messi will play in the 2026 World Cup remains unanswered.
Will Messi feature in the next World Cup? That question is still unresolved, and the superstar has not confirmed anything on the matter. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni revealed that he has not yet discussed the World Cup with the captain.
In the final match of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Argentina will face Ecuador early Wednesday morning Bangladesh time. Messi has already been scheduled to rest for this game.
In their previous match at Buenos Aires’ Monumental Stadium, Argentina defeated Venezuela 3-0 last Friday morning Bangladesh time, with Messi playing the full match. He scored twice in this emotionally charged game, emerging as the hero.
Before the match, Messi became emotional during the warm-up, taking a photo with his three sons. After the final whistle, his teammates embraced him warmly.
Regarding whether he will play in the upcoming World Cup, the 2022 World Cup-winning hero said after the match that he has not made any decision yet.
Ahead of the Ecuador clash, coach Scaloni told the press that any decision Messi makes will be respected.
“I haven’t spoken with Leo about the World Cup. I know he will make a calm decision, and whatever he decides will be the right choice,” Scaloni said.
Alongside Messi’s rest, defender Cristian Romero will also be unavailable due to suspension, meaning at least two changes to the previous lineup are inevitable. Scaloni also hinted that he might make a few additional adjustments.
