Atalanta offered little resistance under the relentless pressure of the European champions.
PSG got off to a fantastic start in their campaign to retain Europe’s top crown. Dominating almost the entire match against Atalanta, Luis Enrique’s side left the field celebrating a big win.
The reigning Champions League winners secured a 4-0 home victory on Wednesday night. “After captain Marquinhos put the team ahead, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia doubled the lead before halftime. In the second half, Nuno Mendes and Gonçalo Ramos added the other two goals.”
Having won their first four domestic league matches, PSG wasted no time in Europe either, celebrating a goal as early as the third minute. “Receiving a pass from Fabian Ruiz, Brazilian defender Marquinhos scored from close range.”
Once ahead, PSG launched wave after wave of attacks, leaving Atalanta pinned back. “Maintaining around 70 percent possession, PSG registered nine shots in the opening 20 minutes, five of which were on target.”
PSG’s attacking intensity dipped slightly after that, but Atalanta couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity.
In the 39th minute, the home side doubled their advantage. “Receiving a pass from Achraf Hakimi, Georgian forward Kvaratskhelia struck from outside the box.”
PSG nearly scored a third goal just three minutes later. “Marquinhos was fouled inside the box, earning a penalty, but Bradley Barcola, who scored twice in a league match three days earlier, was denied by goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi.”
Early in the second half, PSG extended their lead. “From a difficult angle, Portuguese defender Mendes converted a pass from Barcola into the net.”
Finally, in the first minute of added time, Portuguese forward Ramos “nailed the coffin shut for Atalanta with a precise left-footed strike inside the box.”
