Manchester United 2 – 1 Chelsea
After a poor start to the season, this victory comes as a huge relief for Manchester United and coach Ruben Amorim.
At Old Trafford, United turned early pressure into goals despite the drama of a red card. With a player sent off in the first half, Chelsea focused on defending, but United still managed to score twice before halftime. Chelsea pulled one back late in the game, but the hosts held on for a 2-1 win in the English Premier League on Saturday.
The breakthrough came from Bruno Fernandes, whose milestone goal opened the scoring for United. Casemiro then doubled the lead, only to be sent off shortly after receiving a red card. Chelsea’s lone goal was scored by Trevoh Chalobah.
The win is a major relief for Amorim, who had been under intense pressure after United’s poor start and rumors of potential dismissal if they lost to Chelsea. The victory also improved United’s position in the table: after five matches, they now have 7 points from two wins and a draw, moving up to ninth place. Chelsea, with one defeat in five matches, sit sixth with 8 points.
Despite being temporarily down a player, United dominated in attack. Out of 11 shots, four were on target, while Chelsea managed just one on target from five attempts.
Chelsea suffered an early blow in the fifth minute when goalkeeper Robert Sánchez fouled United’s Brian M’Bomo outside the box and received a straight red card. Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca responded by bringing on young winger Estevao Willian for Philip Yorgensen and strengthening the defense with Tosin Adarabioyo in place of Pedro Neto.
United capitalized on the numerical advantage. In the 14th minute, M’Bomo’s cross found Patrick Dougherty, whose header set up Fernandes to volley home from six yards. This marked Fernandes’ 100th goal in 200 appearances for United across all competitions.
Chelsea made a tactical change in the 21st minute, substituting winger Cole Palmer for midfielder Andre Santos. But United kept control and doubled their lead in the 37th minute. A defensive lapse allowed Harry Maguire’s header to find Casemiro, who scored from close range.
Before halftime, Casemiro received a second yellow card for a foul on Santos, leaving United down to ten men.
The second half saw fewer clear-cut chances for United. In the 63rd minute, Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana headed a ball into the net, but the goal was ruled offside. With ten minutes remaining, Reece James delivered a cross that Chalobah converted, reducing the deficit.
Three minutes later, Fernandes unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box, only for Chelsea’s goalkeeper to make a stunning save. Despite Chelsea’s late push, United held firm and celebrated a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Old Trafford as the final whistle blew.
